Q+A

You recently released your single “Mood Swing,” tell us a bit about what inspired it.

In the past few years I’ve started to experience some pretty big mood swings and energy shifts. One day after getting really down on myself about my instability, I wrote down “Mood Swing” in my notes app where I keep my song ideas. I thought it would be fun to write a song called mood swing that would literally swing on the melody of the hook. The day of my session with Kline and McEwan I threw out the idea. As the kids say… they “understood the assignment.” Alex started building an awesome track and McEwan started to throw out really amazing rhythmic ideas. We had an absolute blast chasing it down. A few weeks later I posted it on Tik Tok and within one week it had over a million views… crazy!

It was really important to me that “Mood Swing” found a balance between self-aware, funny, and serious. This song is about something that legitimately debilitates me and many people. I’ve gotten a lot of responses on Tik Tok from individuals with bipolar disorder, other mood disorders, and mental illnesses. I personally have OCD and suffer from a particular theme of it that focuses on relationships specifically. The first line of this song takes the listener through what my brain thinks in a loop in regards to relationships on a daily basis. While I’ve written a few emotional songs that dive pretty deep into this, I had yet to write one that made light of it. Writing this song was like medicine to me. If I ever find myself starting to spiral now, I can think of this song, laugh it off, and get back to the present moment. “It’s just a mood swing, honey don’t freak out. If I go up, well I’ll come back down…” those words are being sung just as much to myself as they are to the love interest in the song. I’m so grateful to have a song that normalizes an experience that I’ve often felt very isolated in - and I’m over the moon that other people feel the same way about it.

Tell us about the writing process behind “Mood Swing.”

I wrote “Mood Swing,” with Alex Kline and Steve McEwan - two absolute legends. Steve has landed cuts with Kenny Chesney, Carrie Underwood, Brooks & Dunne, James Bay, Keith Urban, and even Eminem! Alex Kline just recently co-wrote and produced Tenille Arts’ number one hit single “Somebody Like That,” and her songs have been recorded by artists such as Ronnie Dunn, Reba McEntire, Mitchell Tenpenny, Terri Clark, Gary Allan, Bill Anderson, Meghan Patrick, Cassadee Pope, Jordan Rager, Mason Ramsey, Tara Thompson, and many others. While these writers have landed many hit songs in the country world, their writing and Kline’s production totally fit into the pop space, too. The “Mood Swing” session was my first time getting the opportunity to co-write with Kline, and the second session I had with McEwan.

You currently write for Nashville-based publishing company, Twelve6 Ent - tell us about your musical journey:

Here’s the story of how I got booked as an opener on my first tour: A few years ago, I was on season 2 of American Idol. Bobby Bones was the mentor on Idol at the time and he was doing interviews throughout Top 40 week. While the cameras were getting set up for our interview, Bobby and I were chatting and I told him I live in Nashville. In what I thought was just him being friendly, he said that if I got cut from the show he’d love to have me come play piano for his comedy band on the road. (I don’t know why, because I never played piano on the show, and I’m not great at it.) One week later I had gotten cut and was on a hike at Radnor Lake in Nashville. All of a sudden I hear my name being called by none other than Bobby Bones? He just so happened to be going on a hike at the exact same time in the exact same place as me. A few weeks later I was on tour playing keys for Bobby Bones! Eventually he caught on to the fact that I’m not that great of a keys player, so he hired Walker Burroughs. (Fun fact: Walker and I were in an a capella group together in college and were both on Idol together too.) Bobby asked me to be the opener for the tour instead, which I’d say was a pretty great deal for me!

As an artist and writer in Nashville, what challenges have you faced? Any advice?

I think the most difficult part about the Nashville scene, and maybe the music scene as a whole in the digital world that we live in, is feeling jaded and getting stuck in the comparison cycle. I’m 24 years old and there are days where I’m doubtful and not as excited as I want to be about what I’m doing, what I’m making, or what anyone’s making or doing. And it’s not that I don’t like what I’m doing or making or that I don’t like what other people are doing or making… I’m just overwhelmed. Overwhelmed by how much music there is, how many artists there are, how quickly things change, how good it all is, what good even is… is what I’m making good? Do I like what I’m doing? Or do I just know it’s what works so I’m doing it? I’m realizing that while these doubts are common among nearly all the musicians I know, escaping the jaded mindset is a choice. Each day I have to wake up and choose the mindset that stands in awe of what is possible. I have to remind myself of how incredible and beautiful it is that we live in a world where the creation and distribution of music and art is accessible to nearly everyone. On the comparison front… I’m learning that sometimes I have to respectfully place my blinders on so I can focus on my artistry and stop measuring myself up to others, but sometimes I have to shut off my artist brain entirely, sit back, and just listen to and enjoy music.

We’re excited to premiere the video for “Mood Swing” - what can you tell us about it?

The “Mood Swing” music video comes out this Friday, February 25th! It was a BLAST to dream up and create. I wanted the visual portrayal of this song to be as dramatic and over the top as possible. It probably doesn’t look like it, but when I’m in the thick of one of my mood swings, I feel like each of the characters in this video. I’ve always felt like there are all these different personalities inside of me, but I only let the softer, more easy-going, “sunny” version out. This video shoot gave me the opportunity to express the extremes that exist within me for the first time. It turns out that borrowing your roomies combat boots and aggressively ripping bananas in half can be pretty therapeutic.

FEATURE: ANNA MAE - "COMING OF AGE"

Established Alt-pop artist, Anna Mae takes a step back from her synch-heavy writing world (over 150 major TV and film placements) and steps into the next phase of her music career with the effortless new tune, “Coming of Age.” This is the 3rd release on the musical journey that will come to be a 2-part album for the Prescription songs writer.

“I’ve always loved the bittersweet feelings of nostalgia and “Coming Of Age” is full of those emotions. The older I get, the farther away I get from my teenage years. But I feel like regardless of the distance, those years still impact me so much and always will. And I love that. It’s almost like our “coming of age” years are forever immortalized for us, maybe more than any other time in our lives.”

“In many ways, I think this project is me coming back to my roots. It’s me making the thing I've always dreamt of, but just didn’t know how to create in the past.”

FEATURE: JACK VINOY - "SIGNAL"

Check out Nashville-based indie-alternative artist, Jack Vinoy’s experimental new single “SIGNAL.” the follow up to his debut record, “SOLACE.”

I wrote and recorded SIGNAL in a couple sessions in October and December last year. As soon as I started working on the beat I knew there was something about it that I really liked, but it took me a couple sessions to sort of chisel away at it until I had what so needed. After I had most of it structured out I called Fesssi K. to do some background vocals, she’s a friend of mine from Florida. She has such an incredible voice and I thought she would sound great on this track, and I think her contributions really took it to the next level.

What excited me most about making SIGNAL was just experimenting with different sounds and my voice. The production of this one is some of my favorite I’ve ever done, and it’s a totally different sound from anything I did for my debut album. This song also felt like a turning point for my vocals, I felt like I found new ways to use my voice, between different ways of processing, and different performative styles.

VIDEO PREMIERE: JACKSON DREYER - "TALKING THROUGH OUR FRIENDS"

Nashville-based, Soul / Pop artist, Jackson Dreyer, gives us vibey basement nostalgia with the premiere of the video for his release, “Talking Through Our Friends.” Check out a bit of the background on what went down, and watch the video below.

YMC: Let’s start with this video: is this in a garage?

JD: This absolutely my garage. 😂 Nate Boyd (@claytoncorners on IG) helped me transform the space, and shot and edited the whole thing.

YMC: Favorite part of the video?

JD: If you take a look at the artworks of all of the songs on this project, you’ll notice several recurring items (the yellow phone, the disco ball, etc.), so I wasn’t going to make a video without some nods to the other songs! My favorite prop is the cardboard cutouts of the silhouettes in this artwork.

YMC: So this is your fourth single of the project; are you making an album?

JD: I am making an album! Still haven’t “officially” announced it, so I guess this is the YMC exclusive scoop! It was pretty funny when Talking Through Our Friends came out because people were telling me “I love the EP!“ and I didn’t realize that yeah, it is an EP! So I’ll release two more songs, and the EP will continue to grow before the whole album is here.

YMC: It’s pretty obvious what this new song is about, but what’s was the writing session like?

JD: I came into a write with Tony Cianchetta and Clara Park pretty frustrated that communication lines were down with this girl I had been going on dates with, and I felt like the only way I could see what was really going on was to talk to her best friend. Out of that frustration, we just had fun with the story. (Referencing the fictional friends Kacey, Staycee, and Leighcey had us cracking up). Once the song was written, Joël Bruyère worked his magic taking it across the finish line.

YMC: What’s your favorite part of the song?

JD: Oh, that’s gotta be the bridge into the final chorus. I was absolutely not planning on having a key change in the song, but the bridge ended up leading us so naturally into a much higher key. We need more key changes these days!

YMC: Anything coming up do you want to tell us about?

JD: Yes! If you’re in Nashville, my band and I will be playing a big show at Acme on August 10th! Keep your eyes peeled on my socials for the next single, because it isn’t too far out, and it might just make you tear up a little bit!

PREMIERE: LENA STONE - "LIGHTWEIGHT"

Lena Stone brings us the debut of “Lightweight,” the 3rd single in a journey of an established Country act returning to her pop roots.

“Lightweight is one of the first songs I wrote for my pop project and it just felt like exactly the sound I wanted for this new music. It’s cinematic and emotional, and the lyrics are so vulnerable which I’m really proud of. Falling in love is exhilarating and scary and feels like a night you’ve had one too many, and that’s what I wanted this song to capture.”

“In so many ways, pop makes more sense for me. I wasn’t raised on country music - I found country music,” Stone explains of her previous tenor in the genre. “Pop has always come so naturally to me. I grew up listening to James Taylor, Sarah Bareilles, John Mayer, Pink, and Britney Spears.”

“Lightweight” produced by Phil Barnes, signifies an epic new era for the Nashville artist. And will be just one piece of a highly anticipated full-length record slated for release Fall 2021.

TALKIN' GLITCH WITH STEF

Nashville Pop Kween, Stef, talks Fashion, Passion and her epic new concept project, “A Glitch In Our Virtual Reality.” Stream the EP below!

1) Congrats on the release of your new EP! What messages are you sharing with A Glitch In Our Virtual Reality?

Thank you! The main point that I want to get across with this ep is that everything will eventually be ok. If you are in a situation that is hurting you or limiting you now, get out of it! I know that is easier said than done but I want everyone to know their worth and not accept less than from toxic people. The EP is a concept record with each song representing a stage in the lifecycle of a relationship. Songs like, “I Used To Build Dreams About You,” represent being in love, then you have the polar opposite of a song like “Hi, my name is lonely,” representing the darker stages of a break up. STAGES ARE OKAY. They help you grow.

2) Artists work incredibly hard to have such a successful EP. How do you prevent creative burn-out and keep that passion going?

I haven't experienced burnout creatively because I truly love all aspects. I look forward to brain storming my cover art, planning a music video, styling myself, creating a social media roll out plan, promotion across platforms, etc. I feel like I have only released music I genuinely like. I like it so much I want to listen to it (lol). It does get hard when you're working 1000 miles an hour and as hard as you can work and still some accomplishments are out of my control. I can't control if I have a song go viral on tiktok, or even what playlists the dsp’s support with.

3) Tell us about the "switch." music video. Who collaborated on it with you and how did it come to life?

This video was so fun to film! I would say I am slightly into acting, so getting to act a little in my music videos is always fun. I did this video with some of my good friends- Bryant Bural and Noah Tidmore as well as their team they like to bring on. They really let me have a vision as an artist and listen to what I want and like, and then take it to the next level and make it so much better with their creative expertise. Clearly, I cant and dont want to do it all so I love that part of the job- getting to hire out other creatives to do what they do best- especially when they are your friends.

4) You’re one of the top sellers on Depop! Can you elaborate on how you have such a successful store? What do you love most about fashion?

My store's success came from posting on tiktok. It is insane the cross over tiktok has across platforms. I started posting a lot of fashion content and it started to blow up on tiktok. Those people would follow and buy from my depop. I have well over 35,000 followers on depop which is a built in market. I love fashion and always have. It is another way to express myself creatively.

5) You grew up in Huntsville, AL and moved here for your career. Tell us about the move to Nashville!

I graduated highschool in may 2018, and moved here July 1st of 2018. I was 18 and had no idea what I was doing. I lived with two amazing girls a few years older than me and they really made me feel comfortable enough to where I was able to branch out and explore. I started in country music and was doing that till Jan of 2019 then I started to venture into the pop world. Sept of 2019 I released my first project, an ep titled “Why do I laugh when I cry?” with three tracks on it.

6) What do you want other creatives moving to Nashville to know about our city?

Nashville is so big, yet so small. There is enough room for everyone, and everyone is so kind the biggest thing you can do is support your peers and really try to make as many meaningful connections as you can.

'BREAKING' IT DOWN WITH ABIGAIL OSBORN

Fans of Lennon Stella and Maggie Rogers, buckle up! We’ve found the next iconic lyric-driven pop babe, and it’s Abigail Osborn. Learn you a little bit about her background and the making of the music video for her new single “Break My Heart.” Be sure to check out the vid below.

●            Have you always been interested in music, even from a young age? Was there a particular song or performance you heard or saw that made you think you had to do this as a career?

-               For as long as I can remember, I’ve been intrigued by the idea of music and live performance. It wasn’t until I got a little older that I realized this was something I really wanted to pursue, and actually couldn’t envision myself doing anything else.

Screen Shot 2021-04-30 at 12.11.46 PM.png

●            You have a new song called “Break My Heart”. What is this track about and did a specific event inspire you to write this song?

-               This song has been a long time coming. It’s a culmination of a lot of my dating experiences all tied up into one concept, focusing on the fact that I have a tendency to date guys who want to jump into a relationship, have a great time, and then dip out when it comes time to commit to something. There was one specific instance where I knew exactly where a relationship was going as I was getting into it, but I decided to jump into it anyways. I knew this guy was going to be just like all the rest, but made a conscious effort to make our time together the best it could possibly be, knowing it  was going to be short lived. This guy proved to be just like all the rest, but this time I at least got a cool song out of it!!!

●            The music video for "Break My Heart" is really colorful and so fun to watch. What inspired the music video for “Break My Heart”?

-               As I was writing this song, it brought up a lot of conversation between me and my friends, and I realized that I was definitely not the only one experiencing this kind of thing. I wanted to make something that felt as visually empowering as the song felt to write. The song feels pretty ironic to me, because the idea of a heart break is not very fun, but I wanted to change that narrative by making it look like the best time ever. I decided the best way to do that was by throwing a giant heart break party. I got all my closest friends together and rented out an all pink house and we spent the night sharing our stories about the horrible dates we’ve been on, while drinking champagne and dancing. It was the best time ever.

Screen Shot 2021-04-30 at 4.49.06 PM.png

●            What was it like filming the music? Any on-set stories?

-               It was a pretty chaotic experience, not gonna lie. I rented out a house to shoot in, but only had it for 3 hours total. We had to do a ton of prep work beforehand to make sure it wasn’t a total disaster, and that we could get everything we needed in that amount of time. We got in the house and immediately started shooting, and had to be super careful not to spend too much time on any one shot. Ty Combs is my videographer and co-directed the video with me and he is such a rockstar to have agreed to this crazy suggestion.

●            How has living in Nashville influenced your music?

-               Living in Nashville has definitely had a pretty big influence on my music. I’m collaborating with so many writers here and am consistently pushed to be the best version of my artist self. I’ve seen myself grow and evolve in my artistry so much in the past year, and am excited to see how that continues in the future. Definitely really thankful to be here and be surrounded by so many creatives I look up to so much.

Screen Shot 2021-04-30 at 12.11.17 PM.png

●            Last question: what’s next for you? What are your plans for future releases?

-               So much new music. I’m so excited for all I've got planned for the rest of the year. I spent most of last year recording and filming videos to go along with each song, and I'm just feeling really ready to put them out into the world. On top of that, playing live is something I'm really, really looking forward to doing again. It’s been really exciting to see the ways that live music has started to come back, and I look forward to more of that towards the end of this year.
