Indie-pop chick, HAYL, tells how heartbreak helped remind her of the true meaning of the holiday season in her new single, “Christmas Without You”. Check out the backstory behind the moody, festive bop below:
“I wrote "Christmas Without You" with some of my favorite co-writers, Will McBeath and childhood friend Kendall Brower. I love well done pop Christmas music and I wanted to try to write a song that also matched my music sonically. It was a hot July day and Kendall had to FaceTime in because, well you know why #covid. I had this idea of writing a Christmas song about how happy I am now, while touching on the story of when I spent Christmas with my ex-boyfriend and his family. It felt right at the time to travel to another state and spend Christmas with the person I loved, but a few months later when we broke up I realized I should have spent that Christmas with my own family.”
We wrote half of the song and then didn’t revisit it until a few months later. I called my producer Austin Cannon, we scheduled a session to create the track and I still had to finish writing the song. Kendall came over the night before I was going to record vocals and we finished writing it. It’s always really special writing with her because I have known her for 20 years. Our families are friends and she knows my story well.”
