BUSINESS CASUAL: JACEE BADEAUX OF BIG YELLOW DOG PUBLISHING

Q+A
Describe the typical day and / or general duties of a music publisher:
I think what makes this job so exciting is that my day to day is always different. Typically, my day will include listening to new songs, pitching songs, setting up co-writes, and making sure that my writers have everything that they need to succeed. Oh and emails...lots and lots of emails.
What do you look for when signing a new artist or writer?
When looking to sign a writer, I tend to look for someone who is writing music that I can connect with. If I can connect with the song that they have written, whether it makes me happy, sad, mad, or want to dance; then it is likely that others will be able to connect with it as well, and that is really what music is all about.
What are some basic things a writer or artist know when they reach out to a publisher?
I think when you reach out to a publisher, you should make sure they know who you are and who referred you to them, we are not allowed to take unsolicited material, so it is important that we know who the music is coming from. Other than that, writers tend to ask me what I want to hear, and I always tell them that I want to hear what they really love, and what makes them feel.
What should every independent artist or writer be doing no matter what?
I think that every independent artist or writer should be going to shows (when we're not under quarantine). Do your research on other artists and writers and their teams and go support them at their shows. Their team will also probably be at those shows, so you are bound to bump into someone that you could introduce yourself to. The music business, especially in Nashville, is very much a community so just being a part of and around the community and being friendly can open a lot of doors.
Anything you recommend they avoid or don’t do?
When you are out at shows, remember that your reputation is everything and word gets around quickly, so be sure to play it cool and just be friendly.
Any recommendations for artists who do pop, or other music that is not “country” in Nashville.
I think for any artist/writer in any genre, you should find your crew. Start by writing with your friends and have your friends introduce you to their friends to write and so on. I can not name one artist/writer in town that didn't come up with a crew of people that they continue to stick by to this day.
Describe, in your own words, a ‘hit’ song.
A hit song to me, is something that you feel a strong emotion when you hear it. There are songs that are hits that make me laugh or want to dance, and there are also hits that make me want to cry right there in the driver's seat. They're the ones that when you are feeling a certain way, you immediately know which song to turn to.
Any artist you see crushing it that writers or artists can take notes from?
I am a really big fan of Lewis Capaldi. He is a great example of an artist that is very authentic to himself in all facets of the word. Through his songs, you can hear that he just leaves it all out there for everyone to see and that is inspiring to me and hopefully to other artists/writers to see that you don't have to change yourself to be accepted, by just being unapologetically you, you will gain a lot more fans that resonate with that.
DADS ALL DAY WITH MYYLO

Q+A
TALK ABOUT THE NEW TRACK “KISSING ON YOUR DAD.”
“Kissing on Your Dad” is an anthem for dad lovers everywhere. Do you like men who can provide you with emotional and financial stability? Did you ever wish Stacey’s Mom was about a dude? Well my sweet baby angel this song is for you. I co-wrote it with JBach and Christian Fiore right before the pandemic hit. The animated video was a collaboration with Patrick Naughter.
WAS IT WRITTEN ABOUT ANYBODY IN PARTICULAR?
Haha no. It’s more of an ode to the archetypical, mythologized dad who is hot, financially stable, emotionally with it, and cool as hell.
ANY DAD-CRUSHES YOU’D LIKE TO SHOUT OUT?
Big shout out to Papa Francis of the Catholic Church.
HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR DAD IS GONNA FEEL ABOUT THIS TRACK?
Hahaha I’m choosing to imagine a reality in which my dad never hears this track.
YOU’VE RECENTLY MOVED TO LA VIA NASHVILLE. TALK ABOUT CREATING IN LOS ANGELES DURING COVID.
The transition has honestly been fire. I think creatives get caught up in the 9-to-5 grind of late capitalist culture which causes us to create hundreds of songs that will never see the light of day. When my writing and touring schedule got derailed, I refocused my creative energy towards projects that will actually produce revenue. I wrapped a sync project with two writers from Pulse, wrote a Christmas sync project with a writer from Big Deal, executive produced an album for an artist named Zolita coming out this fall, and wrote more intentionally for my own album. I've been able to do all those things over Facetime. I’ve learned that I, as the songwriter, can drive a whole project forward. That’s something I’ll continue to do even when quarantine ends.
WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE COLLABORATORS RIGHT NOW?
JBach, Jordy, Zolita, Abby Anderson, Jenny Owen Youngs, Christian Fiore, and Dillon Deskin are the hotties of my life.
WHAT ARE YOU FAVORITE QUARANTINE JAMS
I’ve been an album listener during quarantine. HAIM’s “Women In Music Part III”, Chloe x Halle’s “Ungodly Hour”, Remi Wolf’s “You’re A Dog!” - EP, and Mahalia’s “Isolation Tapes” have been replayed endlessly.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR MYYLO?
I’m working on an album these days! I have three songs finished and a tight knit group of collaborators. We’ll likely be doing virtual writes and, if Covid permits, spending a weekend or two writing in the desert.
ANYTHING ELSE U WANNA TALK ABOUT
Can I talk about how much I love YMC? Jeez Louise.

Q+A
TALK ABOUT THE NEW SINGLE, “WHITE TEE.”
The story behind this single is a little different - although I’m co-writing with other Nashville-based artists and songwriters weekly, I wrote this song in the back of my RV on my road trip to Nashville, when I relocated to Music City from California. It was one of those songs that just flowed out of me - no over thinking the lyrics and not a ton of re-writes - the melody and the words just came to me and I immediately had a vision for this song to be a Pop Country + EDM fusion - something I had never done before. All my previous releases were strictly Pop Country. After the lyrics “You and your White Tee will be the death of me,” came to me, my mind just started coming up with all of these “death” related phrases like “I feel like I’m 6 feet down under the ground ‘cause I’ve found, my piece of Heaven, stay here forever,” which all point to the hook. That sounds dark (haha) but it’s a super fun make-you-wanna-dance song! This song captures the electric energy, that incredible infatuation feeling, that you have when you FIRST fall for someone. Everyone can agree that the beginning part of a relationship when your first fall is one of the most natural highs you’ll ever feel - and that’s what this song is about.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR SOUND AND WHAT INFLUENCED IT.
Honestly, one day I was taking a walk in a small town in Idaho (on my three month road trip when I was on my way to Nashville) and for some reason, I kept listening to Thomas Rhett’s song “Leave Right Now” on Spotify (it’s a Pop Country EDM fusion). This would have made anyone who knows me laugh because before that, I was STRICTLY a COUNTRY music girl, with the occasional NSYNC, Hillary Duff, and Jessie J song on my playlist. In that moment, I KNEW in my soul that’s what I wanted to create - Pop Country + EDM. There was no contemplating if I should “change genres” or not, it was an “I’m obsessed with this sound and I’m going to create it."
WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE COLLABORATORS IN NASHVILLE?
My friend Sid Menon produced this song for me, he’s incredible - he was able to capture EXACTLY the sound I had buzzing around in my head. I met him a few years ago when he was touring with Chris Lane. I got to be friends with the guys and I loved the songs that Sid had produced for other artists. Working with Sid was a no brainer.
I’m super stoked about a song I wrote called “Different” with Haley Decker and Maloney - Haley will be releasing it as a single some time this year, and it’s fire!! (@HaleyDeckerMusic)
TALK ABOUT BEING CREATIVE AND CRAFTING MUSIC IN QUARANTINE.
I’ve learned that I LOVE Zoom Writes! Writing with others virtually is what has gotten me through quarantine. Being quarantined has also allowed me to become more focused, and allowed me to get more music stuff done. The production of “White Tee” was entirely created in quarantine. But, it’s also been a really challenging time, probably the hardest year of my life! And I know that goes for SO many of us. If I’ve learned one thing in this time, it’s that I can handle more than I ever thought I could, and I’m stronger that I thought I was. I feel that goes for all of us - we’ve been forced to live in circumstances that we never thought we could handle; surviving on no income, seeing loved ones gets sick, losing dreams that had been promised, rising to the occasion to fight for what’s right, and much more. Even though this year has been awful, we are stronger because of it.
WHAT IS ONE SONG THAT EVERYONE SHOULD LISTEN TO RIGHT NOW?
Go listen to Stephan Hogan’s new release, debuting 7.10.20 on all major platforms, called “1973”. He’s an incredible guitarist and songwriter, and a good friend of mine. He describes “1973” as a "wood paneled car with no AC and 2 shots of tequila - sweaty and might get you in trouble.” OR “Like LA in the 70’s” Haha it’s a JAM! (@StephanHogan)
WHAT ELSE CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU?
Well now I’m on a Pop Country + EDM kick! I’ll be releasing my next single around early September - it’s in the early stages of production, but it’s a “we’re young and free and VIP even though no one knows who we are” anthem kind of vibe. I’m stoked.
My life long dream is to be on NBC’s Songland to just putting it out there …. :)
ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO ADD?
Yeah, you’re great, and if you’re reading this you have an amazing, irreplaceable purpose on this earth. This year has been hard, but there’s so much more life after 2020. Keep going. Your dreams are important, you are worthy of achieving and experiencing every good thing. You can do it. You are Loved.
