SIX QUICK QUESTIONS WITH MO PITNEY

CURB RECORDS’ MO PITNEY TALKS EXPECTATIONS FOR NEW RECORD, BREAKING BOXES, AND LIFE IN QUARANTINE.

NEW SINGLE “MATTRESS ON THE FLOOR” AVAIL MAY 15 .

Q+A

YOU’RE SET TO RELEASE YOUR NEW RECORD “AIN’T LOOKIN’ BACK” THIS SUMMER. TELL US ABOUT THAT.

I’M EXCITED ABOUT THIS NEW RECORD BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE IT IS A MELTING POT OF ALL MY MUSICAL INFLUENCES IN ONE PLACE… I LIKE A LOT OF DIFFERENT KINDS OF MUSIC, NOT ONLY COUNTRY/TRADITIONAL COUNTRY MUSIC (THOUGH THAT IS MY FAVORITE). I WANTED TO BREAK OUTSIDE MY OWN BOX AND WANTED THE OTHER MUSICAL INFLUENCES IN MY LIFE TO MAKE A NEW SOUND WHEN MIXED WITH THE REST. LYRICALLY, THERE ARE SONGS ABOUT LOVE, LOSS AND REDEMPTION… BUT I MOSTLY HOPE FANS GET LOVE AND REDEMPTION OUT OF IT.

YOU MENTION IN A RECENT POST THAT “STORMS NEVER LAST” IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE SONGS. HOW HAVE ARTISTS LIKE WAYLON JENNINGS AND JESSI COLTER INSPIRED AND CRAFTED YOUR SOUND?

WAYLON AND JESSE, ALONG WITH JOHNNY CASH, WILLIE NELSON, MERLE HAGGARD AND MANY MORE, WERE INSPIRING TO ME BECAUSE IT SEEMED LIKE THEY MADE IT TO A POINT IN THEIR CAREERS WHERE THEY STOPPED PLAYING ANY GAMES ON THE MUSIC BUSINESS SIDE AND REALIZED THE ONLY THING THAT WOULD MAKE THEM HAPPY MUSICALLY WAS TO FOLLOW THEIR HEART.  THEY MADE MUSIC BECAUSE THEIR MUSIC NEEDED TO BE MADE... THERE WERE THINGS THEY NEEDED TO SAY. THEN LITTLE 14-YEAR-OLD BOYS LIKE ME (BACK THEN) WOULD HEAR IT AND COUDN’T DENY THAT IT WAS THE “REAL THING” — I OWE A LOT OF MY STRIVING FOR THE REAL THING TO ARTISTS LIKE THAT.

SPEAKING OF SONGS, YOU’VE WRITTEN SONGS WITH ESTABLISHED NASHVILLE WRITERS LIKE TRENT WILMON AND WENDELL MOBLEY. WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE PEOPLE TO WRITE WITH AND WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT THE PROCESS?

THEY ARE GREAT! I ALSO LOVE, WILL NANCE, BOBBY TOMBERLIN, DEAN DILLON, AND PAUL OVERSTREET, JUST TO NAME A FEW MORE.

THE BEAUTIFUL THING ABOUT CO-WRITING IS, EVERY SINGLE PERSON APPROACHES WRITING A SONG A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENTLY — IN THE SAME WAY THAT I GATHER INSPIRATION FROM DIFFERENT ARTISTS' SOUNDS THAT I LIKE, FOR RECORDING. I HAVE TAKEN BITS AND PIECES OF EACH WRITER THAT I’VE WRITTEN WITH TO CREATE MY OWN STYLE OF WRITING. AND THE WAY I WRITE NOW COULD’VE NEVER HAPPENED WITHOUT CO-WRITING.

MY ADVICE FOR NEW WRITERS IS TO CO-WRITE A LOT, BUT TO ALSO WRITE A LOT OF SONGS BY YOURSELF! THE SONGS THAT SEEM LIKE THEY START TO SPILL OUT OF MY HEART ARE THE SONGS THAT I WRITE BY MYSELF. THE SONGS THAT FEEL LIKE WILL TAKE A LITTLE MORE WORK AND HAMMERING ON - I NORMALLY BRING THOSE IDEAS TO OTHERS IN CO-WRITES.

YOU’VE STARTED A VIDEO SERIES CALLED ‘MO MONDAY’ ON YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA - HOW HAS IT HELPED YOU CONNECT WITH YOUR FANS DURING THIS TIME?

MO MONDAYS HAVE BEEN A HUGE HELP IN CONNECTING DURING THE QUARANTINE! IT’S BEEN A GREAT WAY TO SHARE OUR LIFE AND WHAT'S BEEN GOING ON, BUT ALSO REVEALING SOME PERFORMANCES IN CREATIVE PLACES!

ANYTHING YOU’RE BINGING IN QUARANTINE?

MY WIFE AND I WERE BINGING BOY MEETS WORLD, BUT WE JUST MOVED ON TO EVEN STEVENS.

WHAT ELSE HAVE YOU ENJOYED IN QUARANTINE?

QUARANTINE HAS BEEN GOOD FOR FAMILY TIME! I THINK EVERYONE GETS WORRIED THAT TOO MUCH TIME TOGETHER IS A BAD THING, AND FOR US, THAT HAS NOT BEEN THE CASE. HAVING THE EXTRA TIME GIVES MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR CERTAIN MOMENTS OF MEANINGFUL CONNECTION — WHETHER IT’S HAVING BREAKFAST, LUNCH AND DINNER TOGETHER, OR PRAYERS BEFORE BED TIME WITH MY LITTLE GIRL… THOSE LITTLE MOMENTS HAVE A BIG IMPACT ON THE FLOW OF OUR WHOLE DAY HERE. MOMENTS LIKE THOSE ARE THINGS THAT I AM HOPING TO HOLD ON TO WHEN THINGS RETURN TO NORMAL. AND ONE OF THE THINGS WE ARE DOING TOGETHER AS A FAMILY IS BUILDING AND GROWING A GARDEN — PICS TO COME!

Q+A

YOU JUST RELEASED YOUR NEW SINGLE, “TOMORROWS PROBLEM, ” TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT IT.

TO ME “TOMORROWS PROBLEM” IS A BLUE COLLAR ANTHEM FOR PEOPLE LIKE ME. THE PEOPLE WHO GO OUT AND BUST THEIR BACKS EVERYDAY TO EARN A LIVING.  WHAT I HOPE MY FANS WILL GET OUT OF IT IS TO MAKE THE MOST OUT OF EVERYDAY, ENJOY LIFE AND DON’T FORGET TO HAVE FUN!

YOU RECENTLY SIGNED TO MV2 / LOST CITY RECORDS - TALK ABOUT BUILDING YOUR TEAM AND THE IMPORTANCE OF FINDING THE RIGHT CHAMPIONS.

MY WIFE, KIDS AND I ARE BEYOND BLESSED TO HAVE SUCH AN AMAZING TEAM BEHIND US! I WANTED TO HAVE A TEAM THAT WOULD BE HONEST AND STRAIGHTFORWARD WITH ME ABOUT EVERYTHING! I FOUND THAT WITH EVERYONE AT MV2/NEW LOST CITY RECORDS - THEY TOOK A CHANCE ON ME WHEN I WALKED INTO MY MEETING A "NOBODY." I AM SO GRATEFUL AND THANKFUL FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY.

YOU’VE BEEN BUILDING A DOCU SERIES OVER SOCIALS - HOW AS THAT HELPED YOU CONNECT WITH FANS AND NEW LISTENERS DURING QUARANTINE?

I WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW WHO I AM, WHAT GOT ME HERE, AND WHAT HARDSHIPS I’VE HAD. I NEVER TOOK THE STRAIGHTEST PATH, I’VE HAD UPS AND DOWNS. WE ALL HAVE UPS AND DOWNS IN LIFE AND I WANT TO SHOW THAT. I WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ME FOR ME AND MY STORY, NOT JUST MY VOICE.

TALK ABOUT YOUR MUSIC - WHAT INFLUENCED IT, AND WHAT MAKES IT DISTINCTLY YOURS.

MY PAPA IS MY BIGGEST INFLUENCE! I GREW UP LEARNING TO PLAY AND SING FROM HIM. (I’M KIND OF AN OLD SOUL) I GREW UP ON OLD SCHOOL COUNTRY. I THINK I BRING AN OLD SCHOOL SOUND WITH A MODERN COUNTRY/BLUES STYLE! I WANT TO BRING THE OLD SCHOOL COUNTRY FANS AND MODERN COUNTRY FANS TOGETHER!

YOU’RE FROM OKLAHOMA, HOW HAVE ARTISTS LIKE TOBY KEITH, VINCE GILL AND GARTH BROOKS INSPIRED YOU? ANY CAREER PATHS YOU LOOK UP TO?

I LOVE TOBY, VINCE AND GARTH. I THINK THEY ARE AMAZING ARTISTS WITH GREAT SONGS! MY BIGGEST INSPIRATION FROM OKLAHOMA IS BLAKE SHELTON THOUGH. HE HAS AMAZING SONGS AND EVERYBODY LOVES THE GUY. EVEN THOUGH I HAVEN’T HAD THE CHANCE TO MEET HIM, HE SEEMS HUMBLE, KIND AND GRATEFUL FOR HIS BLESSINGS. I WANT TO BE LIKE THAT. I WANT PEOPLE TO MEET ME AND LEAVE SAYING “WOW THAT GUY IS SO NICE!”

ANY ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE TO UPCOMING ARTISTS AND WRITERS.
NEVER GIVE UP, BELIEVE IN YOURSELF, WRITE WRITE WRITE, NEVER BURN A BRIDGE, AND BE PATIENT! THINGS RARELY HAPPEN OVER NIGHT AND YOU JUST HAVE TO GRIND UNTIL YOU WANT TO GIVE UP AND THEN KEEP GOING!

ANYTHING YOU’RE ENJOYING OR BINGING IN QUARANTINE?

ME AND MY WIFE HAVE STARTED ‘THE WALKING DEAD’ FROM THE BEGINNING AND ARE TRYING TO MAKE IT ALL THE WAY THROUGH! WE HAVE ALSO STARTED WATCHING ‘OUTER BANKS!’

7. WHAT’S CAN WE EXPECT NEXT FROM BLAKE HENDERSON?

MY TEAM AND I HAVE SOME AMAZING SONGS WE ARE WORKING ON RIGHT NOW AND YOU SHOULD BE READY TO HAVE A GOOD TIME!

EXCLUSIVE LOOK AT 90'S COUNTRY INSPIRED, KALEE SMYTH'S "THE CEILING"

90’s country inspired, Kalee Smyth, gives us a behind the scenes look at the tracking of her new record, “The Ceiling,” as well as an exclusive acoustic performance of the lead single, “Bring Our Love Down.”

The 4-song EP, produced by Misa Arriaga (Kacey Musgraves) and Ryan A. Keith (The Band Perry, Usher) is a modern-day country classic, drawn from influences such as Pam Tillis, Natalie Maines, Lee Ann Womack and more. Says Smyth:

"I used to think of myself as only a singer. I never thought I would be releasing an album of music I wrote. My advice to anyone wanting to try something new right now is to get out of your own way and prepare to be amazed. Thinking about doing something is the first step. After that there is only doing and - voila, you are doing the thing you never thought you would." - Smyth

8 QUICK QUESTIONS WITH DREW BALDRIDGE

DREW BALDRIDGE TALKS FAITH, FIANCES, FAVORITE COLLABS AND MORE. CHECK OUT THE NEW SINGLE, “BEFORE YOU,” BELOW.

Q+A

TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT SINGLE, “BEFORE YOU” AND WHO YOU WROTE IT WITH
I wrote “Before You” with my buddies LoCash. The song is based off what my life was like before my now fiancé Katie.

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE COLLABORATORS IN NASHVILLE?
I love writing with my buddies LoCash. I also have been writing a lot with my buddy Michael Tyler. My first record I wrote 6 songs with Tim Nichols and too this day he is still one of my favorite writers in town.

FAITH IS AN IMPORTANT THEME IN YOUR MUSIC - HOW DO YOU BALANCE THAT?
My faith is my rock solid foundation in my career. Whenever I’m stressed or at a low spot I always know I have a purpose and god’s calling to do. Music isn’t everything in this world. It’s about how many souls am I gonna get to heaven with me one day.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE POSITIVE THINGS YOU’RE SEEING FROM THE PANDEMIC?
I feel like the music community is finding ways to still come together through all this craziness. So many live streams and people are getting creative to get their music and shows to fans. I love seeing it.

ANYTHING YOU’RE BINGING ON NETFLIX RIGHT NOW?
I’m in the middle of watching Money Heist right now. I’d highly recommend it.

HOW ARE YOU ENJOYING QUARANTINE WITH YOUR FIANCE? IS THERE ANYTHING YOU’RE LEARNING OR DOING TOGETHER?
Our wedding plans are coming along very slowly lol. We don’t know how we want to do it. And we have been planting a garden together so that’s been nice. We have more time together than we ever have and we’re really enjoying it.

IS THERE AN ARTIST WHO’S CAREER PATH YOU ADMIRE AND WHY?
I really admire Eric Church’s career and just how he always stays true to his sound.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD RIGHT NOW, AND WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU?
I’m really looking forward to getting back out on the road. I miss seeing the fans and playing shows. I’m hoping to put some more music out this year, so be on the lookout ;)

'Q + PLAY' WITH SUMMER OVERSTREET

SUMMER OVERSTREET TALKS FINDING A FOUNDATION, CRAFTING HIT SONGS, AND RELEASING A SOLO PROJECT. CHECK THIS EXCLUSIVE 8 QUESTION INTERVIEW AND ACOUSTIC VIDEO FOR “HEROES.”

Q+A

TALK ABOUT YOUR NEW SINGLE “HEROES” AND HOW IT CAME TO BE:
I’m so excited for “Heroes” to finally be released! I remember the day we wrote it in 2018. I was driving to Savana Santos’s apartment and it was pouring down rain. I was listening to the audio book “Big Magic” (highly recommend), and suddenly I felt like I wanted to tell a story. So when I met up with Gina Venier and Savana Santos, we tossed around a couple ideas before I told them I had this title and a rough angle how to write it. Thankfully, they got it! It was an effortless collaboration of everyone creating a story from scratch and investing their hearts in the character’s point of view. So no, this song wasn’t about any of our lives. We wanted to step outside of a world we knew and imagine what it would be like to live in a world we didn’t.

YOU’VE GOT A FEW SONGS ON BIG MACHINE’S GIRL GROUP, AVENUE BEAT. TALK ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE THERE:
I will forever love Avenue Beat! I can’t begin to describe how writing with them has changed my life. To elaborate, I was always a very sarcastic silly person who loved to joke and play around in the writing room, but all the songs were straight forward and not very experimental. The first day I wrote with them we wrote “Delight.” Sam Backoff had the title and for some reason a light just went on in my brain and I was like “ooh this is gonna be fun!” All my silly little sarcastic things they loved and understood. It gave me the freedom and confidence to actually be myself in song form! Since that day it has been absolutely magic. Our writing chemistry is like nothing I have experienced and it never feels like work.
I still am honestly surprised they still choose to write with me lol. They are so talented and they could write with anyone. So I’m just happy to be involved.

WHICH ARTISTS ARE REALLY INSPIRING YOU THESE DAYS?
Caitlyn Smith, Caylee Hammack, Patty Griffin, Lori McKenna, Jon Bellion, JP Saxe, Charlie Puth, Ashe, and Audra Mae (I think she’s the shit!)

TALK ABOUT GROWING UP IN A MUSICAL FAMILY, AND HOW THAT’S EFFECTED YOU:

I grew up one of six kids with a father (Paul Overstreet) who has won BMI songwriter of the years five years in a row. So no pressure! We were all required to learn at least one instrument, and if we could sing — maybe even try to write a song. Today most of us work in the music/entertainment industry. It was one of the best ways to learn lessons early that many people don’t find out til after they move to town and have been hitting the pavement for a couple years. My father was always honest about my songs and didn’t sugar coat anything which I really appreciated. So by the time I went to co-write in town I had already dusted off some of the kinks that arise from being green on Music Row. He had experienced it all so he warned me how long it could take, but also that that one “hit” could change everything. I am eternally grateful to grow up like that.

Today, it’s amazing to be able to see all the cool music my siblings are making! My brother Nash’s band Hot Chelle Rae is back together and their new EP is crushing it! My brother Chord’s solo project is amazingly beautiful, and inspiring! We all support each other, and it has never been a competition.

TALK ABOUT BUILDING YOUR TEAM AND FINDING GREAT COLLABORATORS IN TOWN:
Gosh! My team! I have been writing in town for 8 years and it took a while to find the right fit! But last year I finally did at Warner Chappell! They are unbelievable and I feel like they get me! Until recently, that had been a struggle for me. Regarding my team of co-writers: I have found by what seems like a series of random coincidences. I was put in a band with Gina Venier and Zack Dyer who are now my good friends and frequent co-writers. Through Gina I met Joe Fox, who is now producing my music and doing a killer job!
I have found so many great collaborators just by working in town and hanging out at shows. Some of my go-to’s are: Avenue Beat, Nelly Reeves, Audra Mae, Emily Falvey, Joe Fox, and so many more I wish I could name all of them!
I have been writing for in town for awhile so it feels like little by little I’m collecting a solid roster for my musical rotation. It’s so important to have a great collaborative team and to be able to rise up together!

YOU’RE CURRENTLY IN THE MIDST OF RELEASING A SOLO ARTIST PROJECT, TELL US MORE ABOUT THAT.
I had all these songs I loved and a specific way I wanted to say things - that weren’t so “ready to wear” (if you will) for an artist looking for a country radio hit. I didn’t want to wait for the industry to accept it so I said “F***k it, let’s just put them out!”

My vision was to make something modern, honest, and just fun! I wanted to make good music, not worry about genre, and I wanted to say shit people wanted to say but for whatever reason maybe hadn’t yet.

I’m a realist. I like to look at everything with a touch of irony. So I think my personality is going to come through in all of my songs moving forward.

I’ve got a couple more songs that I’m really excited for - they are different and experimental (for me) in the best way. I just wanna create music that I love and hopefully the listener loves!

‘SUCKER PUNCH’ STRIPPED VIDEO

JOHNNY GATES Q + A

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND AND WHO HAS INFLUENCED IT?
I came up in the DIY "Emo" scene, so that world will always be a part of me.  But when I moved to Nashville, I started to really dive into the alt country, singer songwriter world, and I became obsessed - I think I sit somewhere in the middle of all that.  My favorite moments during my sets, are when it's completely quiet, and everyone is just in that moment together.  Whatever genre that is, sign me up!

And as far as influences go, Bob Dylan is probably the best to ever do ‘the singer-songwriter thing’.  And I'm a massive Butch Walker fan.  I saw him play a set at Hollywood Forever, and it kind of changed my life.

TALK ABOUT BEING CONSIDERED A ‘ROCK’ ARTIST IN NASHVILLE
A lot of people hear the word ‘Nashville,’ and they automatically think Country music. - Which isn't a bad thing.  That’s what drew me here, to be honest, and music row has taught me how to be a better songwriter.  But, being a "rock" artist in Nashville, means that your road could be a little bumpier than others, as far as finding where you fit.  I've hit walls in the music industry here, because I looked a certain way, or didn't sound a certain way - but that's just part of it.  I think at the end of the day, being an outlier has forced me to double down on exactly who I was.  There's a great scene here for everything else, and you find it every night in East Nashville.

ANYTHING YOU’RE BINGING ON QUARANTINE - SHOWS, PODCAST, MUSIC, ETC?
I just finished season 3 of Ozark.  I’m obsessed with that one. It took me like two days to finish it, haha.  Zero Zero Zero is another one I’ve been really into. The Watch is another good one too.

I'm a sports nerd when it comes to podcasts, so I'm all about the Bill Simmons podcast.

Regarding music, I'm really into the new Phoebe Bridgers stuff, and the new Ruston Kelly.

I’m basically just trying to not watch the news and get petrified.

TALK ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCES LIVING AND MAKING MUSIC IN BOTH NASHVILLE AND LA
Each city has left a major mark on me, so I’m definitely the wrong person to pick a side.

Nashville fulfills the songwriter in me - and the community aspect is incredible. This city has those special nights where, you’re at a writers round, and you hear a writer like Natalie Hemby or Hillary Lindsay play a song, and it just hits you - this place, and the music made here, is unlike anywhere else. You immediately drive home and want to write a million songs. I’m obsessed with those nights.

LA fulfills the other part of me. It’s beautiful, weird, diverse and crazy. Everything seems impossible one minute, and totally possible the next. I can honestly say LA woken me up as an artist. It has such a scene, that’s hard to find in other cities.  I made some best friends there. Also, the Hotel Cafe is probably my favorite venues to play.

ANY ARTISTS YOU’RE LOVING RIGHT NOW?
I’m a big fan of what Ruston Kelly is doing. His take on the Singer-Songwriter genre is super refreshing. I was obsessed with the Boygenius record ft. Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus and I’m really looking forward to the new solo Phoebe Bridgers album! I’m a fan for sure.

FIRST THING YOU’RE GOING TO DO WHEN YOU GET OUT OF QUARANTINE
Play a damn show! The awkward silence after the live stream songs is starting to get olddd - haha. But really, I’ll probably head home to Rhode Island for a bit to see family. Or just hit a bar with some friends. It’s weird that it all seems so foreign now.

TALK ABOUT YOUR NEW PROJECT AND WHAT YOU’RE EXCITED ABOUT
So my new project is something I’ve been thinking about doing for a long time.  I came up playing in bands, with my best friends from home, but life, the road, and moving to different cities, started to get in the way. Eventually, I started writing more solo stuff and playing solo shows around Hollywood.  It's been a wild ride to get to this point, but I'm just really excited to be making and releasing music that totally represents me, as a person and an artist.  The thing i'm most excited about is getting back in the van and touring, with these songs.

TELL US THE BACKSTORY ON ‘SUCKER PUNCH’
I don’t have the best resume when it comes to successful relationships, and I guess you can say I’ve got a guard up. With Sucker Punch - I had the hook. It was about a certain situation where, she just kind of hit me out of no where, and I was okay with it.

I wrote it with my buddy Jake Ohlbaum, from The Foxies, over at his spot in East Nashville. The plan was to fully record it for my next EP, but then this whole quarantine thing happened, and I wanted to just record something quick and live-ish and release it ASAP. I threw down a guitar/vocal at my spot, emailed it over to my pedal steel player in LA; Dan Wistrom. He tossed some pedal on it, sent back, and we were done. I think a lot of people right now are just creating with what’s around them, and I wanted to be a part of that.
