Q+A

You’ve got a new single out this Friday (June 12) called, “Save Me The Trouble” - tell us a bit about that.

I wrote this song with Ryan Beaver and Jake Mitchell a couple years ago. It was one of those writing sessions where I knew pretty early into the write that this song was gonna be special. It was THE song that kind of set the wheels in motion of "it's time to go record some music." It means a lot to me because it's my first single, but it also means a lot because of how special it's been since day one.

You have opened up for acts like Eric Church, Jake Owen, Lee Brice - how do you think the industry is handling this time without live music, and all other creative limitations placed upon them during quarantine?

I've been so impressed by our music industry during all of this. Between virtual songwriting sessions, live streams... I've even sang vocals into voice memos on my phone and had producers drop it into the track?? We are most definitely adapting and finding ways to still create and share music. It saddens me so much that we can't actually go play shows, but seeing the creative ways people have continued to keep going makes me hopeful for the future.

You’re a successful songwriter with cuts by Alan Jackson, Tyler Farr and more.  How do you balance songwriting and artistry?

Somebody gave me great advice years ago, they said, "always write for yourself even if the song isn't for you. You'll develop a style that will be unique to you that will not only make you a great artist, but as a songwriter people will come to you for songs that only YOU write." I've always hung on to that and tried to just write the best song. Through that approach I've found some really cool things for myself and also been fortunate to have some other artists record my songs as well. :)

You’re influenced by artists like Lee Ann Womack, The Dixie Chicks and Miranda Lambert - how do you feel about the current state of the music industry for women?

It seems like females are breaking through a little more lately. Seeing females like Gabby Barrett and Ingrid Andress, both new artists, have number one's back to back was SO inspiring. We haven't had a ton of females, but it feels like that's changing :)

You recently recorded a project, produced by Bart Butler (John Pardi, Craig Campbell, etc), Who are some of your favorite collaborators in town?

My favorite collaborators in town are Emily Falvey, Riley Thomas, Autumn McEntire, Emily Landis, Claire Douglas, Cameron Jaymes and gosh I could go on and on. Aside from Bart Butler, who produced my record, some of my other favorite producers are Jake Mitchell and Hayley McLean. I think they're both ones to watch!

What artists should everyone go listen to now?
Lee Ann Womack. She is one of my heroes!

What’s your go-to quarantine drink?
A skinny margarita with a lime!

What can we expect from you in the future?
More new music :)
